7.4.0 MAMMARY GLAND: INTRODUCTION
The glandula mammaria consist of 15-20 branching tubuloalveolar glandular lobules. Growth and activity are hormone dependent. The glands are embedded in fibroadipose tissue. At pregnancy new alveolar end terminals of the gland are created in the stroma. The epithelium is cuboidal and single layered with fatdroplets and myoepithelial cells (together= double layered). The intra and extralobular ducts end in a common ductus lactiferus. The collection contains samples of active and inactive glands.
Cancers originating in the terminal ductules are called lobular carcinomas, those from the ducts ductal carcinomas.
