4.2.1 POJA-L-3785+3782+3784+3783
Title: Mallory bodies as cellular pathological examples of liver diseases (human)
Description: Stain (A) Hematoxylin-eosin. (B, C, D) Electron micrographs.
(A) Formation of Mallory bodies (1) associated with cholestasis. (5) Pigment storage. Note that granulocyte (arrows) attack and penetrate affected liver cells (satellitosis).
(B, C, D) Mallory bodies (MBs) are intracytoplasmic bodies seen in hepatocytes of alcoholic liver disease, primary biliary cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. They originate from cytokeratin’s modified to advanced glycation end products (AGEs). The disorganized cytokeratin filaments (2) are visualized in these three micrographs.
Note also the vesicles (4). It is well established that autophagy plays a role in liver protein (filament) aggregates related diseases, hepatocyte cell death, steatohepatitis, hepatitis virus infection and hepatocellular carcinoma.
(B) is an example of neutrophagy showing the neutrophil nucleus plus granules localized within the liver cell affected by Mallory body cytokeratin aggregates.
Keywords/Mesh: liver cell, Mallory bodies, alcoholic hepatitis, cytokeratin, electron microscopy, POJA collection
