Title: Meningoencephalitis
Description:
(A): Macroscopy of pyogenic meningitis, human. Note the partly cloudy surface that is covered by purulent exudate (white milky appearance).
(By courtesy of P. Wesseling MD PhD, Head Neuropathology, Department of Pathology, Radboud university medical center, Nijmegen, The Netherlands).
(B): Stain hematoxylin-eosin, human. Meningoencephalitis applies to the inflammation of the meninges and brain parenchyma.
Note dense cellular infiltrate in the arachnoid.
(C, D): Stain hematoylin-eosin, human. Acute viral encephalitis (human) with perivascular cuffs of lymphocytes/plasma cells and spread infiltrates.
In (D) details of the perivascular lymphocytes/plasma cells/macrophages cuff as well as the reactive responses of astrocytes accompanied by cell proliferation (gliosis, blue arrows).
Keywords/Mesh: nervous tissue, meningitis, encephalitis, gliosis, pathology, histology, POJA collection
