Title: Epididymis
Description:
(A) Stain hematoxylin-eosin, human. (B) Stain Weigert hematoxylin, caput / efferent ducts, human.
(C) Stain Weigert hematoxylin, cauda / ductus epididymis, human.
The survey in (A) shows mainly cross sections through the tortuous convoluted epidydimal duct (1) in the cauda of the epididymis.
(2) Pampiniform plexus with thick-walled testicular veins. (3) Part of the periorchium (tunica vaginalis testis).
(B): The efferent ductules with a total length of 20 cm of all convoluted tubules with irregular outlined epithelium that forms
protrusions (arrows, ↘)which bear locally stereocilia or kinocilia and microvilli.
Note the smooth muscle cell fibers (red) surrounding the efferent tubules.
(C): Cross-sections of epididymal duct in the caudal part of the epididymis with a two layered pseudostratified columnar epithelium.
The basal cells are small and round, the columnar cells tall with oval nuclei. The cells bear stereocilia that often stick together.
The duct is surrounded with smooth muscle cells/myofibroblasts (red, C, 4).
Keywords/Mesh: testis, epididymis, efferent ductule, epididymal duct, histology, POJA collection
