Liver cells (A2; B1 and C1). The Kupffer cell in (A) is flat and slender with long processes covering the microvilli of the liver cell. The Kupffer cell in (C) has phagocytized maximally and subsequently gets a star-shaped form and is attached to the environment with a minimal number of slender processes before disappearing with the passing bloodstream.
In (B) the considerable peroxidase activity within the nuclear membrane and RER is illustrated with the DAB substrate (electron-dense stain). Arrows indicate the thin slender extensions of the endothelial cell (5) along the liver cell surface.
