Background: Capillaries with continuous endothelium and an uninterrupted basal membrane are most common, i.e. non-fenestrated somatic capillaries. Lung capillaries adjacent to the alveolar spaces share fused basal laminae of the endothelium and the alveolar epithelium (Air-Blood-Barrier).
