Title: Corpus cavernosum of the penis
Description:
(A-C) Stain Mallory, human. (D) Elastin stain (Masson), human. (E) Scheme
The corpora cavernosa are encompassed by a dense collagenous sheath, the so-called tunica albuginea (A,1).
These corpora consist of a firm trabecular network that is covered with a thin endothelial layer (E, 9)
forming labyrinth-like cavernous spaces (2) that become filled with blood (C, 8) upon stimuli (intumescence).
The blood is provided by muscular helicine arteries (so-called arterial constrictors) (B, 5).
The trabeculae consist mainly of collagen fibers (blue in B, 3 and red in E, 3) through which bundles of smooth muscle
fibers are interwoven (red in B, C, 4 and blue-purple in E, 4). These fibromuscular trabecles are also richly provided
with elastin fibers (stained brown-red in D, 7) and nerve bundles (C, D, 6).
Scheme in (E): (2) cavernous space, (3) collagen fibers (red); (4) smooth muscle cell bundle (blue-purple); (9) endothelium (green).
Keywords/Mesh: penis, cavernous body, corpus cavernosum, helicine artery, histology, POJA collection
