Title: Zona fasciculata (I) of the adrenal gland
Description:
Zona fasciculata. (A): Stain Azan, human. (B): Modified hematoxylin-eosin, human. (C): Electron microscopy, gerbil. (D): Electron microscopy scheme of a cell of the zona fasciculata, human. (E, F): Electron microscopy, rat. (A - C) show that the cells of this zone are arranged in parallel columns or cords and between them a capillary network is running. The cells contain numerous dissolved lipid droplets giving the cells a sponge-like appearance. The rich lipid content is due the synthesis of hormones (glucorticoids) stimulated by ACTH released from the hypophysis.
(D): Cell with numerous mitochondria of the tubular type, a large SER profile and some lipofuscin droplets.
The cell is in close proximity to adjacent fenestrated capillaries.
(E):The hormone producing cell of the zona fasciculata. Note the numerous elongated mitochondria of the tubular type (zoom in).
The SER is well-developed.
(F): Resident macrophage in the zona fasciculata with numerous dense-stained lysosomes.
Keywords/Mesh: adrenal gland, zona fasciculata, glucocorticoid, tubular mitochondria, histology, electron microscopy, POJA collection
