The carcinoid tumor (2) is originally present as small nodules in the submucosa and further grows towards the muscular layers (A, 3). They appear as nests or cords of small, round cells.
In (C, 1) a remnant of a normal crypt is present. The tumor cells are often of a neurosecretory type and can produce serotonin causing clinical features such as diarrhea, bronchospasm etc.
