5.6 POJA-L2421+La0076+2424
Title: Ureter 1
Description:
(A): Survey cross-section relaxed ureter, stain Weigert hematoxylin-eosin, human.
(1) Transitional epithelium. (2) Muscular layer of outer longitudinal and inner circular muscles intermingled with the lamina propria connective tissue. (3) Tunica adventitia.
(B, C): Ditto ureter. Details of the transitional epithelium of a relaxed urothelium. The surface epithelial cells (arrows) are also called umbrella cells or facet cells (“Deckzellen”) as they can be stretched to extent and cover the underlying epithelial cells in order to protect them against the urine. These cells are fortified with an apical crusta (protective glycoproteins) and a dense apical network of intermediary filaments and actin filaments (in the electron microscope).
Keywords/Mesh: urinary system, ureter, transitional epithelium, urothelium, umbrella cell, facet cell, histology, POJA collection
