(A, B): primordial follicles with partially vital oocytes (1) surrounded by distinct flattened follicular cells (2) and embedded in ovarian stroma (3) stained blue in (B). The follicle epithelial cells (2) become larger in (C), as a proliferating primary follicle, and as a secondary follicle in (D). They multiply and turn into granulosa cells of the corona radiata that surrounds the oocyte (1) in the tertiary (or antral, vesicular) follicle in (E). Note some blood vessels in (D) and numerous blood vessels in the internal theca in (E).
