(B): Isolated hair shaft surrounded by its cuticle, SEM, human.
(C): Detail of (B). The hair cuticle is the outermost part of the hair shaft, consisting of hard shingle-like layers of overlapping cells. The direction of the free edges is toward the free surface of the epidermis.
In this isolated specimen the free margin of the epidermis is located at the bottom of the micrographs.
