Title: Prostate gland
Description:
(A, B, C) Stain Azan, human.
(A): Transverse section of the human prostate gland and the pars prostatica of the urethra in the area of the seminal colliculus.
(1): Urethra.
(2): Seminal colliculus with submucosal (periurethral) glands.
(3): Prostatic ducts.
(4): Mucosal glands.
(5): Inner zone.
(6): Periurethral sheath.
(7): Main prostatic tubuloalveolar glands.
(B, 8 and C, 8): Fibromuscular stroma surrounding the glands.
Background: There are some 30-50 tubuloalveolar glands embedded in fibromuscular connective tissue stroma derived from
the surrounding fibro-muscular capsule. The glands implicates numerous plicae or folds (see B, C), covered with simple cuboidal
epithelium that contain secretory vesicles.
The prostate gland produces a colorless liquid containing among others fibrinolysin and prostate-specific-acid phosphatase,
prostate-specific antigen, amylase. Usually three layers of concentric glands are discerned, the mucosal ones, the submucosal
ones and the main glands or glandulae propriae, all arranged concentrically around the urethra.
Keywords/Mesh: prostate, tubuloalveolar gland, urethra, histology, POJA collection
