12.2.2 POJA-La0098+L2599+3390
Title: Auditory canal with ceruminous glands in the external ear
Description:
(A): Auditory meatus with ceruminous glands, stain Azan, human. These modified sudoriferous apocrine glands consist of an inner secretory layer of cells lined by an outer myoepithelial layer of cells.
(B): Ceruminous glands, immunoperoxidase staining with DAB and anti-keratin 5/8 antibodies (RCK102), human.
The numerous myoepithelial cells are positive as well as the apical sites of epithelial cells of the tubuloalveolar ceruminous glands.
(C): Ceruminous glands, as (B) but with antikeratin 19 antibodies (LP2K), human. Myoepithelial cells as well as the epithelial cells of the ceruminous glands are strongly stained. Note that the epithelial cells of the hair bulb surrounding the dermal papilla are negative, except for a subset of basal cells (arrows) in the stratum germinativum.
Background: Numerous antimicrobial proteins and peptides are present in the ceruminous glandular cells: beta-defensin-1, beta-defensin-2, cathelicidin, lysozyme, lactoferrin, MUC1, secretory component of IgA, pointing to an innate host defense against diverse pathogens.
CK19 and CK7 seem to play a role in the pinching-off mechanism of secretion.
Keywords/Mesh: external ear, meatus acusticus externus, auditory meatus, ceruminous gland, myoepithelial cell, cytokeratin, histology,
