Title: Verruca vulgaris (common wart, viral infection) II
Description:
Common wart, stain hematoxylin-eosin, human.
(A): Undulant character of papillomatous epidermal hyperplasia revealed by the thickened epidermis thrown into papillary folds.
(B): Hyperkeratosis (1) and cytoplasmic vacuolization (2) in the superficial layers as well as clumped keratohyalin granules in several cells due to viral cytopathic effect.
(C): Normal epidermis/dermis adjacent to the wart area. Note slight keratinization of epidermis, presence of hair follicles with sebaceous glands and local cellular infiltration.
(D): Slightly cornified normal epidermis and some infiltrate in the dermis. Note the basal epidermal cells filled with melanin granules.
Background: Verrucae are common lesions at any age and are caused by a DNA virus i.e. HPV. Generally they are self-limited and will regress spontaneously within months to few years. The common warts can occur anywhere, most frequently on the hands as gray-white papules with a rough surface.
Keywords/Mesh: skin, verruca vulgaris, wart, HPV infection, histology, pathology, POJA collection
