4.2.1 POJA-La0274+La0333+L3668
Title: Periportal area (portal triad) and central vein in liver (human)
Description: Stain: Azan.
(1) Liver parenchymal cells.
(2) Branch of the portal vein.
(3) Branch of the hepatic artery.
(4) Bile ductule.
(5) Central vein with free openings to the sinusoids (6).
The liver lobule is centered around a branch of the centrilobular vein (C, 5), limited at each end by the portal triad (A, B) consisting of a branch of the portal vein, the hepatic artery, and a bile duct.
The blood flow within the liver determines the organization of the anatomical unit, the liver cell plate. The blood flows from the periportal triad to the hepatic venule. This creates a metabolic zonation in the liver lobules, i.e. gluconeogenesis is mostly periportal, whereas glycolysis is mostly perivenous. Similar zonations are known for the detoxification system (ammonia and drug detoxification). The zonation is subjected to transcriptional control, involving β-catenin signaling.
Keywords/Mesh: liver, portal triade, central vein, histology, POJA collection
