14.1 POJA-L6062 Muscle spindle in palm of the hand (human)
Title: Muscle spindle in palm of the hand (human)
Description:
The neuromuscular spindle (stretch receptors) is embedded in a connective tissue capsule (a double layer of thick perimysium (1) and thin external capsule (2). The entire interior around the spindle cells (called intrafusal modified muscle fibres) (4) is filled with liquid (glycoproteins and proteoglycans). (3) is sarcolemma of one intrafusal myofibre. Intrafusal muscle fibres are surrounded by a partly damaged internal capsule [from (6) on to the right at the upper side].
The proprioceptors are stimulated upon contraction and relaxation of the (extrafusal) muscle fibres. Afferent nerve fibres (5) end on the intrafusal fibres of the spindle. Efferent innervation is also present. (6) Capillary within the spindle. (Note the bad preservation of the muscle fibres due to paraffin embedding of the histological section).
