Title: Cells of the zona reticularis in the adrenal gland
Description:
Zona reticularis. (A): Stain Azan, human. (B): Electron microscopy scheme, human. (C): Electron microscopy, monkey. The cells of the zona reticularis form an irregular network of small cells intermingled with a fine network of capillaries as shown in (A).
The sponge-like foamy character is far less than in the zona fasciculata. The cells produce androgen hormones. (Some) lipofuscin is present. Note the numerous capillaries (network surrounding the clusters of reticularis cells).
The gonadotrophs producing cell (B) in the zona reticularis has a well-developed SER, a mixed population of crista-tubular-type mitochondria and several large irregular aggregations of lipofuscin/lysosomes (3) and electron-grey hormone containing lipid droplets (4). In (C) SER (3) and mitochondria (4).
Keywords/Mesh: adrenal gland, zona reticularis, androgen hormone, lipofuscin, histology, electron microscopy, POJA collection
