16.1.3 POJA-L7150+7043+7044 Tendon and capsule
Title: Tendon and capsule
Description:
(A+B): Human, Haematoxylin-eosin staining. Tendon characterised with dense regular connective tissue (i.e., also in ligaments, aponeuroses). The birefringent collagen fibres are visualised by (partial) polarisation microscopy (B).
(1): Tendon with tenocytes. Note that the fibres all run more or less in one parallel direction, in contrast to (C).
(C): The human capsule of testis (tunica albuginea) is a thick dense connective tissue composed of interlacing bundles of collagen fibres. The tunica consists mainly of type I collagen fibres, and less type III collagen fibres with some elastin. Note that the fibres, arranged in inner and outer layers, run at all directions and not in one parallel direction. In addition, the layers contain contractile myofibroblasts and fibroblasts. The alternating light-dark polarisation bands illustrate the polydirectional arrangement of the fibres. The tunica provides significant strength and allows organs to resist excessive stretching and distension.
